DODOMA – Nellie, African woman who goes viral because she has three husbands and all living in one house, has sparked controversy. He is known to be a citizen of Tanzania.
Nellie has shared her life story with the media, in which she claims to have been married to three men—one of whom was a brother-in-law.
Nicodemus Agweyo, a Tanzanian lawyer, said polygamy was accepted by law. Meanwhile, polyandry is an offense punishable by state law.
“If a woman is married to more than one man, she is threatened with imprisonment of not more than three years,” he told Ayo TV, which was launched by Tuko, Monday (27/3/2023).
The lawyer added that the clause is direct and does not offer an alternative punishment such as a fine.
According to Agweyo, men who marry married women, even if their religion or culture permits, are also guilty of a crime and can face up to three years in prison.
Nellie married three men after her first husband died in a car accident.
Nellie believed none of her three husbands would cheat on her, as he met all of their needs financially and intimately so there was no reason for them to look outside.
She lost her first husband in a car accident after eight years of marriage and has two children.
