The Latin Grammys will premiere three new categories in their 2023 edition, including composer of the year, and there will be changes in the requirements of some current categories, the Latin Recording Academy reported.
“We are pleased to introduce these new categories that reflect the constant evolution of our music,” said Manuel Abud, CEO of the Latin Recording Academy in a statement. The Composer of the Year category is part of the newly created Composition Area and recognizes written excellence, the profession and art of songwriting.
Nominees must have a minimum of six newly written songs on which they receive credit as a songwriter or co-songwriter and on which they are not a performer, producer or engineer. The new category of best singer-songwriter song, from the Songwriter Area, requires that at least 51% of the lyrics of the song be in Spanish, Portuguese or any regional indigenous dialect and must be from a current album by a singer-songwriter competing in the singer-songwriter album category for the year.
The third new category is the best urban interpreting in the Portuguese language, included within the Portuguese Language Area. Recognize the enormous amount of urban music that is being created in Brazil and Portugal. The singles or cuts can include a fusion of urban styles with other genres, as long as the urban character predominates in them.. The album of the year category was changed so that at least 51% of the total time for albums in the General Area is newly recorded material.
The artist or the producers, engineers, mixers, masterizers and composers of 33% of the total time of the album is awarded if it is not the artist himself who receives it. In song categories it is now mandatory to include the date of composition when submitting a work. The academy also announced new criteria for Best Engineered Recording for an Album. The award is given to the accredited recording engineers and mixing engineers with at least 33% of the album and accredited masterizers with at least 51% of the album within the Production Area.
All updates will take effect on the next Annual Latin Grammy Awards that will take place in November in Spain. ___ An Internet LatinGRAMMY.com.
