TEL AVIV – Great demo rocked Israel on Monday (27/3/2023). This happened after the Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu sacked Minister of Defense (Menhan) Yoav Gallant for opposing justice reform.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across Israel.
Prior to being sacked, Yoav Gallant had spoken out against controversial plans to reform the justice system.
Gallant, who was a senior member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, became the first official to be removed for daring to oppose his boss’s judicial reforms.
In Jerusalem, police and soldiers used water cannon against demonstrators who had gathered near Netanyahu’s house.
On Monday morning, Israeli President Isaac Herzog called on the Netanyahu government to halt its judicial reform efforts.
“For the sake of the unity of the Israeli people, for the sake of responsibility, I ask you to immediately stop the legislative process,” he said on Twitter. “The eyes of all Israelis are on you.”.
The United States, Israel’s main ally, said it was deeply concerned by the development and called for a compromise.
This judicial reform effort has sparked demonstrations over the past few years.
