Feyenoord captain Orkun Kökcü will play with an adapted captain’s armband in the league match against Ajax on Sunday. Another OneLove promotion will be held next weekend, but the midfielder does not want to wear the accompanying band.
The band that Kökcü will wear on Sunday will have the text “Respect for everyone”. “In this way I want to contribute to the underlying message of this action, namely a statement against racism and discrimination,” said the midfielder. “The text on our captain’s armband, which I will proudly wear again on Sunday, covers the load better for me and also suits me better.”
The 22-year-old from Haarlem refused to wear the OneLove band in the away match against AZ in October because he said he “did not want to be a signboard” for the LGBTI movement.
