Damian in Creed III is a formidable boxer with notable resemblances to a villain from the Rocky saga and to someone far more important.
‘Creed 3‘, the latest installment of the franchise started by Stallone, has inspired his main antagonist character, Damian Andersoninterpreted by Jonathan Majors, into two classic characters from the Rocky franchise. Although the first two ‘Creed’ movies were directly connected to Rocky’s film story, this installment focuses much more on the character of Michael B. Jordan and all those who surround him. As in this case of the third installment.
Dame has been friends with Adonis since they were young in Los Angeles. Although they both come from similar backgrounds, their lives have taken different paths. Dame spent nearly two decades in prison after his arrest, while Adonis escaped from jail and became a heavyweight boxing champion of the world.
Upon his release, Dame takes advantage of Adonis’s guilt over his past to earn himself a title shot, which he lands with some brutal, well-aimed punches against Adonis’s protégé Felix.
After claiming the title, Dame becomes openly dismissive and confrontational towards Adonis, openly taunting and eventually confronting him in the ring. Only then, after Adonis scores a hard-fought victory over Dame, can they both speak candidly about their past and their regrets.
The similarities between the Dmajors character in Creed III and James ‘Clubber’ Lang
Damian’s character, also known as Dame, is noted as the one and only rival to Adonis, but also seems like a modern version of the antagonist. James ‘Clubber’ Langto whom the acquaintance gave life Mister T in ‘Rocky III’.
The film plays on the thematic connection between Dame and the previous films, making Adonis’ ultimate victory and personal growth all the more impactful almost like it was in the past.
Although Dame has similarities with Clubber Lang, he also has a lot in common with Rocky Balboawho was the main character of the franchise. Similar to Rocky, Dame is a dark reflection of the central character, Adonis.
In the first Rocky installment, Balboa begins the film working as a small-time thug and many believe he is too old to aim for a major victory. Dame has a similar story, she feels trapped by his past and has to overcome many obstacles to achieve his goal.
Dame mentions Rocky’s unlikely rise to fame and compares his potential fight against Felix to Rocky’s when he was brought from obscurity to fame to fight Apollo.
Both characters have a great thirst for victory and Dame’s passion in the ring is reminiscent of Rocky’s intensity. Furthermore, Dame’s quiet and reflective moments in the film could be compared to the low-key doubts and depressions Rocky experienced throughout the franchise.
