CASABLANCA – Kingdom of Morocco the Islamic nation of North Africa, opened its first government laboratory for processing ganja for use in the medical and food industries.
In a statement, Cooperative Bio Cannat said a laboratory in the northwestern city of Chefchaouen would be used to process cannabis.
According to the statement, the laboratory obtained a license for the use of cannabis for the food and medical industries in October 2022.
It was also stated that cannabis is used for medical purposes because of its many scientifically proven benefits in relieving pain.
“There will be an agricultural experiment with some farmers in Chefchaouen will provide raw materials after providing seeds intended for this purpose,” the laboratory said in a statement as quoted by Anadolu Agency, Tuesday (7/3/2023).
Last November, the Home Ministry said its efforts to tackle the illegal cannabis trade had led to an estimated 80 percent decline in cannabis cultivation.
Last year, Morocco launched a plan for the use of medical and industrial cannabis. The kingdom has also passed laws to legalize the use of the substance in industry and medicine.
Morocco has taken part in the Abraham Accords, a normalization agreement between Arab countries and Israel that was brokered by the United States (US).
Apart from Morocco, other countries that are carrying out normalization with Israel are the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.
