SuaraTasikmalaya.id – Indonesia has finally been officially removed by FIFA as the host of the U-20 World Cup. As reported by the official website of fifa.com, Wednesday night (29/03/23).
“Following today’s meeting between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and President of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir, FIFA has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023. The new host will announced as soon as possible, with the current tournament date remaining unchanged. Potential sanctions against PSSI can also be decided at a later stage.”
That was the first paragraph of FIFA’s statement regarding the cancellation of Indonesia as the host of the U-20 PD which was scheduled to be held from 20 May 2023.
Because the host status was revoked, the U-20 Indonesian national team automatically canceled their appearance at the World Cup. The slot left by the Garuda national team will be filled with a substitute host national team when it is announced later.

The hopes of the nation’s children have vanished to compete in a grand event like the U-20 World Cup. Like falling down a ladder, this cancellation was also supposed to be followed by a number of FIFA sanctions against Indonesian football activities.
Shortly after the FIFA decision was published, the hashtag ‘Golput’ became a trending topic on Twitter.
Netizens seem to connect Indonesia’s failure to become the host of the 2023 U-20 PD with political polemic in the country. Especially after a number of high-ranking officials rejected the presence of the Israeli national team in Indonesia.
