According to a first statement on behalf of President Guillermo Lasso, the earthquake killed at least 14 people. More than 380 people were injured.
Roads impassable
By far the most victims fell in the southern province of El Oro. At least 44 homes were also destroyed there and another 90 homes damaged. Dozens of medical institutions and schools were also damaged. Roads in the region are impassable due to landslides.
In the province of Azuay, next to El Oro, one person was killed when a wall fell on a car in the city of Cuenca. As far as is known, there is no damage in Peru.
