Final Fantasy XVI is, without a doubt, one of the most anticipated releases of 2023. Many are already wondering how much time they will have to set aside to finish Square Enix’s next release for PlayStation 5 and its lead creatives have already made it clear that you are going to need a long time.
It was in a chat with Famitsu (via IGN) where Hiroshi Takai, director of Final Fantasy XVI and Naoki Yoshida, producer of the project, talked about the length of the game. As they explained, those who only focus on the main story will be able to finish it in approximately 35 hours.

However, Final Fantasy XVI will be much more than its main story. The game will have secondary content, as well as skills and equipment to be obtained. In this way, those who want to finish it 100% will have to dedicate much more time to it. Something like 70 to 80 hours, Yoshida estimates.
“If you want to master and hone all the skills, collect all the accessories, complete all the side quests, and fight all the monster hunters, you probably need around 70-80 hours of gameplay,” Yoshida said.
The adventure will not end there for those who want more of Final Fantasy XVI. As it turns out, the JRPG will also have a New Game+ mode called Final Fantasy Mode. This is an option that, at the end of the story, will allow you to start it from 9 while retaining all your power. At the moment it is a mystery if there will be a reward for finishing the second round.

Yoshida wanted Final Fantasy XVI to be shorter
Final Fantasy XVI won’t be the longest game ever; however, it does enter a duration that can be considered long. This is why it is very striking that Yoshida originally wanted the game to be shorter.

In the interview, Yoshida commented that they are aware that today’s players “are very busy with other things.” This is why they wanted to have a story of around 20 hours so that finishing it would be accessible. That said, little by little they added more things, which ended up expanding the story by ten more hours. While short games are welcome, we think no one is going to have a problem with Final Fantasy XVI being longer than originally planned.
