Yes, you read that right, Bali has had enough of unruly tourists. Exactly for this reason visitors will no longer be able to use motorbikes to get around the Indonesian island.
This Monday Governor Wayan Koster stated that the tourists: “They are messy and misbehaved”. From now on foreigners will be obliged to use only and exclusively means of transport prepared by tourist services that meet certain safety standards: “To guarantee quality and dignified tourism,” he added.
It is unclear how and from when the ban will be enforced, but things get serious: the governor has asked for the support of the legal ministry to allow Bali to revoke visas if foreign tourists are found riding motorbikes, or if they are found committing other offenses such as working illegally or abusing residence permits.
This drastic move, which will inevitably damage the country’s internal economy, was taken in the light of various events on the streets of Bali. Last month, a Russian tourist he has been arrested by the police after driving in state of drunkenness and colliding with a local motorcyclist, resulting in his hospitalization. In January, however, a Ukrainian and a Russian tourist died in a car accident.
