Guillermo Del Toto revealed that upon his arrival in the United States in the 1990s, along with his cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, who worked on “The Pan’s Labyrinth”were humiliated by a talent agent for being Mexican.
“Why do I want a Mexican if I already have a gardener?” they answered.
He shared the anecdote at a press conference after the Oscars ceremony, where he won his third prize for the film produced by Netflix and co-directed with American animator Mark Gustafson.
Guillermo del Toro took the opportunity to talk about the importance of diversity and the representation of minorities in Hollywood.
“The first duty of diversity is: every time you have to do something, you must do it as well as you can,” he said, adding: “Because you are not alone in your work, you are carrying behind a legion of people who come after you.”
He also commented that little by little there are fewer cases of discrimination or racism but there is still work to be done.
“The contempt that existed in the 90s has been gradually overcome, I think we are better, the work is never complete, there is always something else to do. It is important that each one of us do something for a crowd that comes after” .
The director also expressed his happiness for his triumph and dedicated his award to his father Federico del Toro, who passed away in November 2022 from complications of the COVID-19.
Pinocchio is Guillermo del Toro’s first animated film and is based on the book by Charles Collodi, not in the Disney version. She competed with four other animated films: Charm, Luca, Raya and the Last Dragon and The Mitchells Against the Machines.
