You’ve probably noticed, but car interiors don’t get any cosier. Where you used to enjoy the warmth of your transmission tunnel in a high-quality leather chair, nowadays you mainly find vegan materials in a clinically minimalistic void. To prevent motorists from filling that void by mounting those nodding dogs or figurines of Hula dancers on their dashboards, Audi started experimenting with its own decoration. And, of course, very environmentally conscious.

The Germans have come up with the bright idea of integrating real plants into their car interiors. They say they have developed the world’s first ‘car plant’, with the succulent plant supplied by flower house Daniel Ost and the pot made by Audi from recycled plastic. The setup was worked out by a Belgian team to fit the new Q8 e-tron, with a large Audi logo placed on top of the dashboard as a base. Your plant would then find a spot in the fourth ring, where it will hopefully be firmly attached enough to survive the instantaneously available torque of the average EV.
For the time being, it is just a wild idea, but Audi says it has plans to really bring something similar to the market. They also substantiate this with the necessary figures, because they questioned 2,000 probably quite surprised Belgians about their floral preferences in the field of car interiors. It showed that 24% of those surveyed are actually open to more nature in their interior, and that figure even increased to 43% among hipsters under the age of 35. Let’s hope they all remember to give the poor thing a little water now and then.
