ATHENS, MARCH 16 – A general strike of public and private sector workers is underway across Greece, while student demonstrations are planned in Athens and in the main cities of the country to demand truth and justice after the train crash in Tebi, which took place on 28 February last, in which 57 people lost their lives. The previous strike, which took place on 8 March, gathered around 65,000 people in the country and today’s mobilization promises to be equally impressive. Maritime connections to the islands are interrupted, while disruptions in air traffic are expected. “We ask that the real culprits of Tebi’s crime be brought to light and that the policy of privatization of public services be stopped; we also ask that the protection of work and life is no longer treated as an expense item” in the budget, reads the statement from Adedy, the Confederation of Greek civil servants’ unions.
