Scream: The Self-Aware Franchise
I’m not the biggest fan of the Scream series/franchise. And not because of its good or bad quality. Still I can say that this new installment is everything fans expect: blood, plot twists, internal humor with nods to the entire saga… Personally I have been very entertained and I have found it a worthy successor to the Scream franchise.
Scream VI is the latest installment of the successful horror franchise that has kept viewers on edge. for more than two decades. This film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett with a script by James Vanderbilt, Guy Busick and Kevin Williamson, the five being responsible for the “requel” Scream, from 2022.
Although you might expect a sixth installment in a franchise to be tired, Scream VI manages to maintain the essence of what made the series so successful. in the first place and at the same time presents an exciting and relevant plot.
One of the film’s most notable strengths is its ability to maintain tension and suspense throughout the entire plot. The film opens with a high-octane opening sequence, which not only sets the tone for the film but also sets the level of violence viewers can expect.
Throughout the film, he is introduced a series of surprising twists and exciting action scenes that keep us glued to our seats.
As it should be in this franchise, the directors (and the writers, of course) do an excellent job of play with classic horror tropes while subverting themallowing the viewer to be on constant alert.
One aspect that stands out in Scream VI is his cast of characters. Although the main ones are already known to us from previous installments, and almost become archetypes, the film has a series of actors and actresses that give us credible and exciting performances.
Not only that, but the movie also introduces new characters, some of which are very interesting and take the plot in exciting new directions. All this, of course, if we maintain the suspension of credulity.because both the victims and the murderer look like superheroes with super strength and other abilities such as omnipresence or super intelligence.
But perhaps the most impressive aspect of Scream VI is that the film is remarkably aware of itself and its place in popular culture, allowing important topics such as online bullying, feminism or cancel culture to be discussed among many others. Instead of just touching on these themes, the film integrates them into the plot in an organic and meaningful way. In this way, instead of being just a horror movie, Scream VI becomes in a certain way a reflection on the society and culture in which we live (although that is not its first objective, of course).
Another impressive element of the film is its ability to stay true to the characters and story of the original franchise while taking her in exciting new directions. The film builds on the universe established by previous installments in the series, allowing fans to feel familiar with the world and characters. However, instead of simply repeating the same formula, the film introduces twists and turns to the plot that keep the story fresh and exciting.
In summary, Scream VI offers us a comfortable, recognizable place for fans, who will enjoy this movie because manages to keep alive the most identifiable of the Scream saga but going one step further forward in the franchise, all seasoned with blood, well-managed tension and constant internal references.
