France also won the second leg of qualifying for the 2024 European Championship. In Dublin, the football players of national coach Didier Deschamps were 1-0 too strong for Ireland. After last Friday’s 4-0 against the Orange, the French are in the lead in group B with 6 points.
The French had quickly distanced themselves from the Orange in the first match in the European Championship qualification in Paris. After 8 minutes it was 2-0. The Irish held out longer in Dublin. France did have chances in the first half, including through a header from Antoine Griezmann, but was unable to score.
Shortly after the break, it was a hit for captain Kylian Mbappé’s team. Irish midfielder Josh Cullen did not clear the ball well and Benjamin Pavard was able to intercept it at the edge of the penalty area. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu could not stop his shot.
The Irish looked for the equalizer and got chances through Jayson Molumby and James McClean. French keeper Mike Maignan made a good save in the final phase on a hard header from Nathan Collins and, just like against the Dutch, kept the goal clean.
France and Ireland will play their next qualifiers against Gibraltar and Greece in June. The Dutch national team will then play in the Nations League.
