TOKYO – At approximately 13:30 on March 5, 2023, the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force reported to the Japan Coast Guard Naha that a fishing vessel capsized in waters near the Senkaku Islands (Okinawa).
It is believed that there were 7 crew members on board, consisting of 1 Taiwanese citizen and 6 Indonesian citizens (WNI).
The incident site is about 150 km north of Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture and about 40 km east of Cuba Island in the Senkaku Islands.
4 patrol boats have been deployed but until now the whereabouts of the entire crew are unknown.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo continues to coordinate with the Japan Coast Guard and the Japan Self Defense Forces to obtain details of the SAR operation.
The Taipei Economic and Trade Office is also coordinating with the Taiwanese authorities regarding detailed ship and crew information.
In particular, the Indonesian Foreign Minister has spoken with the Japanese Foreign Minister to request support so that Japan can deploy ship and aircraft assets to search for the crew members.
