The current generation of consoles is more than two years old and the vast majority of developers still chooses to release their games as cross-gen titles, even though we’re now at a point where more and more major titles are launching exclusively for current-gen hardware. Final Fantasy XVI, one of the most important titles of the year, it’s doing the samebut why did Square Enix make this decision, especially given the scale of the launch and the huge player base of last-gen systems the company is giving up?
Talking recently with IGNthe developers of Final Fantasy XVI addressed the topic, telling how the much more powerful hardware of the PS5 is allowing the development team to realize some technical aspects of the experience that would not have been possible if older and less powerful consoles also had to be taken into account.
Naoki Yoshida ha dichiarato:
While fighting Ifrit and Garuda and the big battle unfolding (in the hands-on demo), the PS5 is loading the next scene in the background. He’s getting ready, so we can move on to the next scene without any problems.
Also fight director Ryoto Suzuki spoke on the matter, explaining that if it wasn’t for the speed of memory and of the PS5 SSDthe game would still be in development, instead of being in the final stages of production and about to launch in June, as it is now:
It’s about graphing the fists and claws and wings (of Eikon’s abilities), all in real time and with beautiful graphics, with all these different options. But being able to do all of this seamlessly and without downtime is possible thanks to the power of the PlayStation 5. If we didn’t have the memory that the PlayStation 5 has and the SSD transfer speed that the PlayStation 5 has , now we would still be in the development phase.
