Feyenoord has once again won a match by striking in the final phase. The Rotterdam leader of the Eredivisie distanced itself from relegation candidate FC Groningen in the 88th minute and won 1-0. Feyenoord therefore has a 5-point lead over pursuer AZ, which already defeated Vitesse on Friday.
Groningen played almost the entire second half with one man less, after the red card for the Norwegian Isak Määttä. As the game progressed, the pressure from Feyenoord did increase, but the number of opportunities played remained limited.
A few minutes before time it was still hit. A cross from Oussama Idrissi was not touched by anyone and disappeared into the goal.
The Pool Sebastian Szymanski made his comeback at Feyenoord after weeks of injuries as a substitute.
Feyenoord, which beat sc Heerenveen in the quarter-finals of the cup tournament earlier in the week, is still active on three fronts. The club will play in the eighth finals of the Europa League against Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine on Thursday.
