Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Asian actress to win the Best Actress award. Everything Everywhere All At Once is about a middle-aged woman who can travel back and forth between countless alternate universes.
‘Dreams can come true’
The first Oscars related to this film were awarded to Ke Huy Quan as Best Supporting Actor. Immediately after, Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Quan plays the main character’s husband, Curtis plays an interest inspector who is her mistress in an alternate universe. Both Yeoh and Quan stressed how important this award is for someone with a bicultural background. They both shouted that ‘dreams can come true’.
With eleven nominations, the film was seen as one of the big favorites at the Oscars.
As expected, the Best Actor statuette went to Brendan Fraser for his role in The Whale. The drama stars Fraser, best known for the Mummy trilogy, as an obese reclusive teacher trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter.
Nothing new in the West
Another film that won many awards, a total of four Oscars, this evening was the German-submitted German-American Netflix film Im Westen nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front) by director and screenwriter Edward Berger.
The drama, based on the famous book by Erich Maria Remarque, won the statuettes for best foreign film, best production design, cinematography and music. The Belgian-Dutch drama Close, about the friendship between two teenage boys, was not nominated.
Indian song wins Oscar
Another milestone during the ceremony was the song Naatu Naatu, from the movie RRR. The song, which was also performed live at the ceremony, is the first Indian song in history to win an Oscar. The song became a worldwide hit, partly due to the dance videos that were made with it on Instagram.
A number of films with many nominations were barely awarded. The biography film Elvis, about the life of Elvis Presley, was left empty-handed after the evening. Two big blockbusters with many nominations, Avatar II and Top Gun: Maverick, both received only one statuette.
Avatar won the award for best visual effects, Top Gun II was awarded for best sound. The Marvel hit Black Panther: Wakanda Forever took home the Best Costume Award.
