Suara.com – Political observer from the National Research and Innovation Agency or BRIN Wasisto Raharjo Jati assessed that BUMN Minister Erick Thohir is a vice-presidential candidate who is able to win the votes of the younger generation and millennial generation in the 2024 presidential election.
According to Wasisto, if nominated as running mate, Erick would be able to win over the votes of millennials because he has experience in the world of sports.
“Pak Erick’s background in the world of sports and being close to millennials is believed to be able to bridge political communication with more senior presidential candidates. With Pak Erick’s background, it is believed that he will be able to win the votes of prospective voters from the younger generation and millennial generation,” said Wasisto in a written statement, Wednesday (22/3/2023).
Previously, based on survey results from Indo Barometer for the 12-24 February 2023 period which was held in 33 provinces involving 1,230 respondents, Erick Thohir occupied the top position as the respondent’s preferred vice presidential candidate if the presidential election were held today.
He won the support of 22.9 percent of respondents. Meanwhile, in second place is East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa with 15.8 percent support. Next, Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar 6.7 percent, and Speaker of the DPR RI Puan Maharani 6.3 percent.
According to him, Erick Thohir succeeded in occupying the top position as the respondent’s preferred cawapres because he was valued by most people as a young and energetic figure.
Even so, Wasisto assessed that in the future the determination of the cawapres election would be decided based on the needs of the presidential candidate who would advance.
“For example, a combination of civilians, Outer Java, military Java, or a combination of politicians and technocrats,” he said.
Based on the schedule set by the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU), the registration of the presidential and vice presidential candidates is scheduled to start on October 19 to November 25, 2023.
As stipulated in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections, the presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs are proposed by political parties or coalitions of political parties participating in the election that meet the requirements for obtaining seats of at least 20 percent of the total seats in the DPR or obtaining 25 percent of the valid votes. national elections in the previous DPR members.
Currently, there are 575 seats in parliament so that the presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs in the 2024 presidential election must have the support of at least 115 seats in the DPR RI.
