England have made a good start to qualifying for Euro 2024. The team of national coach Gareth Southgate won 2-1 against Italy in Naples. Captain Harry Kane scored his 54th goal for the national team to become England’s only top scorer.
Declan Rice had put England 1-0 up in the first half. Kane had doubled the lead from a penalty just before half-time. Argentina-born Mateo Retegui made his debut for Italy in the second half to make it 2-1.
The group C match was a repeat of the 2020 European Championship final. Italy then captured the European title at Wembley by winning the penalty shootout against the English. The match had ended 1-1 after extra time.
