The first live broadcast a 8K resolution worldwide, through TDTwill take place in Spain, thanks to the collaboration between the RTVE Chair at the UPM y Cisco.
DTT in Spain is not exactly a showcase of cutting-edge technology. Many channels continue to broadcast at 720pand the 4K content it is almost nonexistent.
But RTVE is especially interested in DTT does not dieand for this reason it has partnered with several European channels, so that governments continue reserving bandwidth for this way of transmitting television, through the antenna.
One way to show that DTT has a future, is improving its technology. That is why a couple of years ago RTVE broadcast, in a world premiere, a program to 8K resolution through the TDT.
Now the RTVE Chair at the UPM and Ciscolook for the most difficult yet: stream 8K resolution con HDR through the TDT, a live program.
Compressing to 8K resolution in real time
What they are going to do RTVEthe Polytechnic University of Madridy Ciscois to record, compress and distribute signal contents UHD-2 – 8K Phase 2 in real time.
In Phase 2 it means that in addition to 8K resolution, the image will include high dynamic range HDRWCG extended color gamut, HFR high frame rate, and NGA next-generation audio.
To achieve this they will use a 8 MHz bandwidth UHF multiplex.
Adolfo Muñoz, director of the Broadcast Area of the RTVE Chair at the UPM, points out in the press release: “the importance of this pilot is that it will demonstrate not only the possibility of carrying out this broadcast via DVB-T2 today, but also the evolution of the future of signal transport using 5G networks, which we are already working on in the Chair together with our partners”.
“Cisco’s participation is articulated around the Digitaliza investment program, to promote the digital transformation of critical infrastructures, public services and the national business ecosystem,” says Antonio Conde, director of Innovation and Digitalization at Cisco Spain.
for now RTVE It has not communicated the day this test will start, nor what live program will be broadcast to 8K resolution through the TDT. It seems clear that this technology will be viable with the 5G connection, but we are still waiting for DTT to adopt 4K resolution, which is years behind schedule.
