The Twente newspaper Tubantia spoke to people from Twente who found out that the funeral of their loved one is publicly available on YouTube. Some did not even know that the service had been filmed. “I am flabbergasted. We as a family really did not know this,” says a relative to the newspaper. “I’m amazed that there are recordings of this and that everyone can see them.”
Login code
Since the corona period, live streams in the church have become indispensable. Churches stream the Sunday service via kerkomroep.nl and more and more relatives are also opting for a live stream at a funeral. Normally people who want to watch the service receive a login code, but it now appears that not all churches handle this carefully and put the videos publicly on YouTube.
Although not all relatives have problems with the funeral of their loved one being online, they are surprised that they were not informed about this. The sacristan of the reformed church in Wierden informed the Tubantia that he would monitor this more strictly from now on and removed the relevant videos. “Of course this is not possible, we have to do something about it as soon as possible.”
