Disney will lay off 7,000 employees
According to a report by IGN, Disney CEO Bob Iger has made it official that the downsizing that will lay off 7,000 workers will begin this week. The company’s objective, according to its director, is to save more than $5 million dollars, in addition to the fact that the layoffs will fulfill their part in the strategic realignment that is taking place in this post-pandemic period that has been characterized by economic crises, inflation, and recently by a banking crisis in the United States.
According to Bob Iger, the leaders of areas where casualties have been confirmed will have to inform the workers this week and the process will continue little by little until it concludes in the summer of this year. In this regard, the manager points out that the decision will allow a “more effective, coordinated and simplified approach to our business.”
On the other hand, the CEO of Disney took the opportunity to inform the workers who will not be fired that “challenges lie ahead” and asked for their “understanding and collaboration” during this period.
Recently, Disney reported that it will significantly reduce spending on its productions and from now on it will prioritize quality over quantity. Likewise, the company hinted that it could take its productions to other platforms, although some works from its most successful brands such as Marvel and Star Wars would be reserved, but the rest could be subject to negotiation, demonstrating that the economic situation is impacting the exclusivity model.
