TEL AVIV – Several Israeli Embassies and Consulates were closed on Monday (27/3/2023), after diplomats and staff joined a general strike.
They went on strike in protest at Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to overhaul the country’s judiciary.
“The Israeli Embassy will be closed today until further notice and no consular services will be provided,” tweeted Elad Strohmayer, a spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, early Monday. A tweet in Hebrew on the embassy account confirmed the announcement.
Strohmayer explained, “Histadrut, Israel’s largest trade union, instructed all government employees to strike, including Israeli diplomatic missions around the world.”
The Israeli Embassy in France also joined the strike. However, the embassy in England did not make any announcement on his account.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Ambassador to the UK Tzipi Hotovely tweeted praising the security and intelligence cooperation with London.
The general strike has closed Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion international airport and most of Israel’s healthcare system.
Histadrut said the unusual move was meant to “stop the madness” of Netanyahu’s proposed justice reforms.
