JAKARTA – Russia become one of the major countries with a capable military strength. Having the status of one of the world’s nuclear powers, this country is highly regarded by Western countries which are currently at odds with it.
Not only supported by a very large number of troops, Russia also has a lot of sophisticated military weaponry with amazing capabilities. Of the many weapons, among them are the S-400 and S-500 air defense systems.
The two advanced missile systems are currently becoming the mainstay of Moscow’s defense. The S-400 system has even been purchased by several countries, including Turkiye, which is a member of NATO.
Differences between the Russian S-400 and S-500 Air Defense Missile Systems
1. S-400
The S-400 has the NATO reporting name “SA-21 Growler”. This defense weapon was developed by Almaz Central Design Bureau of Russia.
Quoting the Missile Threat page, Friday (31/3/2023), Moscow began developing the S-400 in 1993. Around 70-80 percent of the technology used was an adaptation of the S-300, including the launcher and radar parts.
After a series of trials, the S-400 first became operational in 2007. In use, this tool can use missile series such as 48N6, 77N6, up to 40N6.
Furthermore, the S-400 air defense missile system integrates a multifunctional radar, autonomous detection and targeting system, anti-aircraft missile system, to a control command center.
In operation, the S-400 is reportedly more effective than its predecessor. This system can attack all types of air targets, including aircraft, UAVs (drones), to ballistic missiles at a range of 400 km and an altitude of up to 30 km.
2. S-500
Russia developed the S-500 in 2010, shortly after operating the S-400 in 2007. Several times, they have also conducted trials for its use.
For example, Moscow tested the S-500 in 2018 successfully engaging targets nearly 482 km (300 miles) away.
In operation, this system can launch a number of types of interceptor missiles. Among them are the 40N6M to fight aircraft and cruise missiles with a range of 400 km, up to the 77N6 series which is reported to have a range of 500-600 km.
Quoting the Military Today page, the S-500 is not an upgraded version of the S-400. Unlike its predecessors, this air defense system presents superior technology and specifications.
One of the advantages it has is that it is designed to intercept ballistic missiles. In addition, this tool can also target low orbit satellites.
Based on the explanation above, it can be seen that the significant difference between the S-400 and the Russian S-500 lies in the range and technology used. When compared, of course the S-500 system is superior with the advantage of being able to intercept ballistic missiles as well.
