Now we have been able to learn about a curious strategy used in an official tournament. This is the North American regional title tournament that took place this weekend in Charlotte. The confrontation we are talking about is that of James Baek and Luca Paz.
The strategy worked like this in Pokémon Scarlet and Purple, as they tell us from Dotesports:
James had his Fluttermane and Arcanine against Luca’s Arcanine and Amoonguss. Whenever you see Amoonguss on the field, the first thing that comes to mind is Spore, a 100% accuracy move that will last the target for a few turns. To protect his Fluttermane from falling asleep, James did something unexpected. He had his own Arcanine use Wisp to burn Fluttermane from him. When burned, Fluttermane could no longer be affected by Spore or any other status conditions like Paralysis.
This turned out to be the right move for James because it was immediately followed by a failed Amoonguss Spore attempt from Luca.
Remember that Spore can only be avoided if the affected Pokémon is a Grass-type or has Goggles equipped. EITHER inflict another status condition on it like burn, as in this case. In addition, Fluttermane is a Special Attack, so it is not affected by the Attack reduction caused by burning.
Very interesting, don’t you think? We will have to pay attention to more details.
