JAKARTA – There are several countries that have terminated diplomatic relations. Termination of diplomatic relations can occur due to conflicting policies of a country.
Termination of diplomatic relations is usually the last option if the two countries that are in relations experience a peak of tension or hostility.
However, the two countries that have broken off diplomatic relations are very likely to reconcile or normalize relations.
Countries that Have Disconnected Diplomatic Relations
1. Indonesia-Portugal
Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Portugal were opened for the first time in 1950. However, the two agreed to sever diplomatic relations in 1965 and 1975.
In 1999, Indonesia and Portugal reopened diplomatic relations.
After the opening of this diplomatic relationship, relations between the two countries are increasingly developing by taking advantage of the potential and opportunities for cooperation. This was reflected in the visit of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Portugal in September 2014.
2. Saudi Arabia-Iran
Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations, on Friday (10/3/2023). The agreement was reached in Beijing with Chinese mediation.
After the agreement was reached, Iranian state media posted pictures and videos of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkani with Saudi Arabia’s National Security Adviser Musaad bin Mohammed al-Aiban, as well as Wang Yi, a senior Chinese diplomat.
“After implementing the decision, the foreign ministers of the two countries met to prepare for an exchange of ambassadors,” state television said.
In the video, Wang expressed his heartfelt congratulations on the wisdom of the two countries.
