FC Groningen has not succeeded in alleviating relegation concerns against sc Heerenveen. The Frisians won 2-0 in the Groningen Euroborg. Both goals were scored by Sydney van Hooijdonk before the break.
The game was interrupted for some time in the final phase because some fans of the home club misbehaved. Groningen defender Jetro Willems went to the corner of the stadium where the problems occurred and was punched. As the situation threatened to escalate, referee Serdar Gözübüyük had to send both teams to the locker room. After fifteen minutes, the game resumed.
Shortly before kick-off, it was announced that FC Emmen coach Dick Lukkien will be a trainer in Groningen next season. Emmen is a competitor of the Groningen team in the fight against relegation.
