Second installment of the anthological series about the villains of Batman. Mariko Tamaki and the Spanish Javier Fernández are in charge this time of one of the most classic villains: Dos Caras.
The Batman series that is born from a phrase from The Killing Joke follow his path delving into the antagonists of the bat man. Tamaki and Fernández enter the mind of Dos Caras, a character who is often underestimated but treated as in this special is interesting, powerful and terrifying.
A bad day can drive you crazy. This statement that Alan Moore used to tell the origin of the Joker in his already legendary Killer Joke serves as the premise for the series at hand. In which each installment presents a story of a villain, with a different approach, outside the canon but perfectly introduceable in some cases. The freedom of this situation produces original works and new enclosures. Not far from what exists in some cases, but which always adds new reflections that in monthly installments would be blurred.
The Batman Story: One Bad Day – Two Faces
The first part of the comic focuses on Batman’s perspective, and shows us the efforts to believe in the redemption of Two Faces. All this part is dialogue between characters in which the action comes from old encounters with the villain. Which makes it easy to immerse yourself in the story. Mariko Tamaki manages to convey the personality of each character in a clear and concise way to make the opinion of everyone who knows Dent clear and does not approve of the benevolence with which Batman treats him.
The second part is the inevitable and surprising conclusion for Batmanbut not for the rest of his family. Dent confronts the world, his family and legacy in the Two-Face way., and proves what Batman didn’t want to believe. The detail is that the real final fight between Batman and Two-Face is dialectical, which makes the reader be on the edge of the seat during the entire dialogue between the man who has faith in Dent and Two-Face the villain.
Javier Fernández’s drawing is undoubtedly one of the strengths of the comic
Its dark and detailed style fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the comic, creating a tense and exciting atmosphere on every page that makes the reader feel immersed in the story. The panel composition and narrative are carefully planned and the visual result makes the comic easy to follow and enjoy while adding power to Tamaki’s writing. The design of Harvey Dent / Dos Caras de Fernández is classic but the detail of the gestures of each face makes their dichotomy very accentuated and adds background to this character who is often one entity and two others.
If you are a Batman fan or just a comic book lover, Batman: One Bad Day – Two Faces It is an excellent option to enjoy, without having to be within the time line of the bat man. A bad day he continues his path with a firm step, and this issue may not have the power of ideas of its predecessor, but it raises the necessary questions to be interesting and contribute something to a character who is usually Manichean in his representations.
Mariko Tamaki makes it clear that her brilliant stage in Detective comics was no coincidence with this short story about Two-Face, a character that does not usually have a great emotional force. But Above all, what stands out in this comic is Javier Fernández and his art, which you can now find at Spawn Reypowerful and dark, expressive and gloomy, leaving a Batman wrapped in shadows that hide disappointments and fears.
