“This means a lot to the members of the club, the residents of the village and the business community.” That is what chairman Marc Schoonebeek of amateur club Spakenburg said after the 4-1 victory over the sub-topper from the Eredivisie FC Utrecht in the quarterfinals of the national cup tournament.
Schoonebeek spoke of a “historic result” and said that the club has taken a lot of steps to get this far. The chairman added that he had already taken into account a good result beforehand. “We know that we can play football and that if we get opportunities, we will not pass them up.”
Schoonebeek has no idea how far Spakenburg can get in the cup tournament. “Let’s first see which other clubs go through and how the draw works out for us.”
