Candida auris is a species of Candida, which is the most common yeast that causes infections in humans. Although it was first identified in Japan in 2009, it is considered a relatively new type of fungus. Of course, its origin could be dated back, since studies carried out since its discovery have found samples of Candida auris that appeared in South Korea in 1996.
Candida auris is considered by public health experts as an emerging pathogen. This means that it is an organism that has recently appeared or has been discovered but has had a rapid spread, either in terms of cases or in the countries where its presence has been reported.
In a chat with ABC News, Dr. Scott Roberts, associate medical director for infection prevention at Yale School of Medicine, explained that Candida auris can be spread both by person-to-person transmission and by contact with contaminated surfaces.
“It spreads from person to person, and we don’t think any other fungus spreads in this way in any significant way,” he said. “Plus, it’s very strong. Common disinfectants like Lysol wipes can’t remove it. We need specialized bleach wipes or other products designed specifically for Candida auris.”
Now, the question that surely everyone has in mind, why is Candida auris considered dangerous and its existence has set off alarms? It turns out that it is a fungus whose infection is extremely difficult to detect.
The way to diagnose it is through analysis of blood cultures and other body fluids. Where this becomes extremely complicated is that it requires having up-to-date machines and libraries, something that is not available to all laboratories. In addition, even if it is detected, it can be confused with other types of the Candida fungus.
Another point to keep in mind is that there are strains of Candida Auris that are resistant to different medications and treatments. In this way, curing it is not entirely easy since it turns out to be a different beast than other infections of the same family of fungus.
Symptoms of Candida auris include itching, redness of the skin, and swelling. It can also lead to wounds on the body parts affected by the body and ear infections.
So far it seems like Candida auris may pose a danger to all of humanity. Fortunately, things are not so dire as to leave us in a post-apocalypse like that of The Last of Us, or at least it doesn’t seem that way. That being said, it is a sensitive health issue because it can be deadly for many people.
We say this since Candida auris will not affect the vast majority of healthy people, but it can make immunocompromised, sick or elderly people sick. In fact, it is said to have already been responsible for approximately 4 deaths in the United States.
