Gerhard Meijer and Ingrid Bisschop play the Saxon farming couple Jan and Fenna Wesseling, who, together with their children, provide shelter to several Jewish families during the war. One day they are forced to let in a group of German soldiers. The group is led by Ludwig Mengelberg, a traumatized officer, played by Nillesen himself. Ludwig grew up in the Netherlands and is the child of a Dutch mother and a German father. The film shows how Ludwig gets into a loyalty conflict. Honour, conscience, sense of duty and love make it extremely difficult for him.
