JAKARTA – The figure of Baldassare Cossa may seem foreign to ordinary people. In fact, his name used to be quite famous as anti-pause which brings up a lot controversy .
The mention of Cossa as the anti-pope is not without reason. In its history, the Catholic church called him an antipope because he had opposed Pope Gregory XII.
Profile and Life Journey of Baldassare Cossa
Cossa was born in the bay of Naples around 1365. Quoting the Ranker page, Wednesday (29/3/2023), he had been a pirate in his life’s journey.
This profession follows his two brothers who previously also became pirates. However, they are known to have been captured and beheaded by King Ladislaus of Naples for piracy.
Apart from being a pirate, Cossa has also worked as a condottiere or mercenary captain. After a long time in the world, then he enrolled at the University of Bologna to study law.
At the age of 32, Cossa was made a Cardinal. In addition, he was ambassador to the Pope in Bologna between 1403 and 1408. Being in religious circles, he saw an opportunity to take advantage of the commotion that was going on at that time.
For your information, at that time the Catholic Church was divided between two leaders who lasted most of the 14th century. Urban VI at Rome was declared rightly elected in 1378. However, afterwards Clement VII at Avignon was also declared elected in the same way.
Not long after, the Catholic Church finally made a decision. At the Council of Pisa, the cardinals declared the Avignon and Roman popes illegitimate. As well as deposing him, they elected a new pope named Alexander V.
However, Gregory XII and Benedict XII refused to back down. So that the church at that time had 3 popes at once.
When Alexander V died in 1410, Cossa took over and claimed his position. Bearing the name John XXIII, he argued that he would give this office to the most suitable person.
However, the Council of Constance did not allow Cossa to continue as Pope. They kept pressuring him to resign. After negotiating, he was deposed on 29 May 1415.
After being charged, Baldassare Cossa was detained. He was released only in 1418 with a ransom. After being appointed cardinal-bishop of Tusculum, he died a few months later.
