At least 19 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa died in the night between Saturday and Sunday in a new shipwreck off the coast of Tunisia, not far from Mahdia, in the central part of the country: an NGO reported as quoted by Reuters. In the last four days, five boats carrying migrants on board have been wrecked off the coast of Tunisia: almost all of them, such as the one on which the people who died in the night were travelling, had departed from the Sfax area, an area from which in recent days the departures of boats and fishing boats full of people heading towards Italy intensified.
The Tunisian coastguard says it has blocked about 80 boats in the past four days, detaining more than 3,000 migrants in total. In recent days, the Italian Coast Guard and NGO ships had said they had rescued a total of about a thousand people during various operations.
