Good news for those who never stopped believing in Mitsubishi: you have something to look forward to again. And no, we are not talking about shameless Renault copies such as the ASX-tur or the upcoming Cliolt, but about a real Mitsubishi. The Japanese promise to bring back the Outlander, including a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
‘Challenge 2025’
Mitsubishi has announced it plans to bring its Outlander PHEV back to Europe next year after a two-year hiatus. In that time, a brand new generation of the SUV has actually arrived, which is even more committed than ever to plug-in hybrid technology. For example, the Outlander PHEV combines the CMF-C/D platform of the Nissan X-Trail or Renault Austral with a 2.4-liter petrol engine, an electric motor and a battery pack of 20 kWh. With this, the Outlander should be able to drive about 87 kilometers purely electrically. For now, Mitsubishi is not revealing whether the Outlander PHEV will come to all European markets, but it is already a good start.
In addition, the Japanese have already prepared us for a few innovations under the name ‘Challenge 2025’. For example, in addition to the upcoming Colt and ASX, we can also count on two new EVs, also based on platforms from the Nissan-Renault alliance. We also see an electric pick-up under the covers, just like a set of compact SUVs with hybrid and pure electric powertrains. There are a total of 16 novelties, although the question is how many of them are intended for Europe.
