HBO’s The Last of Us wrapped up last week, showing us just how dire the world can become after a deadly fungus leads us into a pandemic. Well, now humanity is facing a dangerous fungus, but it is not the cordyceps that we saw in the series and in the Naughty Dog game for PlayStation.
In recent days, alarms have gone off in different hospitals in the United States. This is because a recent report from the country’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the Candida auris fungus is spreading rapidly in different hospitals and health centers in the United States.
According to the report, Candida auris is a fungus resistant to different drugs and treatments, whose cases doubled in 2021. Although time has passed since then, this fungus is also responsible for an outbreak that began in November in Mississippi on which has caused at least 12 infections and approximately 4 deaths.

A The Last of Us-style pandemic is not expected, but it is still dangerous
It should be noted that, so far, Candida auris has not proven to be a fatal threat to most people in good health. So you still don’t have to worry about a Last of Us-style pandemic.
Of course, the above does not mean that it is not a serious health problem with the potential to get worse. After all, it is still a fungus that causes infections, resistant to treatment, difficult to detect and has already claimed many lives.
Another point to consider is that it is a real danger for different types of person. For example, individuals with a weakened immune system, the elderly, or those requiring intensive care are at risk from this infection. It is precisely for this reason that the alarms have been raised and measures are being taken to limit the scope of this dangerous fungus.
