1. Call to Come from the Minister of Israel
The call regarding the destruction of the city of Huwara in Palestine came from an Israeli minister. He is Bezalel Smotrich who has the status of Minister of Finance.
Quoting Al Jazeera’s page, Friday (3/3/2023), Smotrich’s controversial comments were made after Jewish settlers surrounded the city of Huwara claiming it was an act of revenge against attacks by Palestinians.
“I think Huwara needs to be exterminated. I think the state of Israel should do it,” the Israeli finance minister was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera.
For your information, Smotrich is one of the far-right politicians in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet. Apart from being Israel’s Minister of Finance, he is also responsible for the civil administration of the occupied West Bank.
2. Causes of Controversial Comments
The controversial comments made by the Minister of Israel regarding the destruction of the city of Huwara are quite surprising.
Quoting the Times of Israel page, Smotrich’s statement was made a few days after the tragedy of the killing of two Israeli brothers by someone called a Palestinian near Huwara.
In its continuation, the incident sparked the anger of other Israeli settlers and resulted in riots. Not only did they attack, they also burned Palestinian homes and cars.
3. Received criticism from various parties
Comments regarding the destruction of the city of Huwara in Palestine sparked a lot of criticism from various parties. One of them is Israel’s close ally, namely the United States.
US State Department Spokesman Ned Price told a press conference that Smotrich’s comments were an incitement to violence.
“Just as we condemn the Palestinian incitement to violence, we condemn this provocative statement which is also incitement to violence,” he added as quoted by Al Arabiya, Friday (3/3/2023).
