Barbara Gordon first appeared in Detective Comics #359 in January 1967. It was created by William Dozier, Carmine Infantino y Julius Schwartz.
Barbara Gordon was the by-product of the TV show Batman’s Adam West. A new female character was wanted to act as a counterpart to Batman. The request was not limited to television and DC publisher Julius Schwartz hoped that the series could introduce the new character at the same time as the comic. Therefore, Batgirl was introduced during the show’s third season and in Detective Comics #359. On the show, Batgirl was played by Yvonne Craig and his version set the standard for what it would become.
