The new trailer for The Flash shows us a prisoner Supergirl, and we explain why
The new trailer for The Flash has given us some images of the Bruce Wayne the Ben Affleckhe Batman by Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, with the latter shown as a prisoner. After several delays, The Flash will finally be released on June 16, and will be key to the new continuity of the DC Universe that James Gunn is creating.
The Flash story
The Flash take as reference the history of the comics Flashpointand follow Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) using her powers to travel back in time to prevent her mother’s murder. What Barry does causes major consequences in his timeline, trapping the hero in an alternate reality where beings with powers don’t exist. In addition, Barry will meet alternate versions of himself and other DC characters, such as Michael Keaton’s Batman and Supergirl.
Barry along with the other heroes will have to save the world from General Zod (Michael Shannon) before returning to their universes. The Flash Trailer Shows Kara Zor-El/Supergirl as a Prisonerand this has an explanation if we think about the Flashpoint story.
flashpoint is the key
Flashpoint is an event published in 2011 and written by Geoff Johns with art of Andy Kubert. In the story, Barry Allen wakes up and discovers that he is in a different reality in which he has no powers, his mother is alive but his father is dead, the League of Justice does not exist, Cyborg is the world’s greatest hero, and Batman is Thomas Wayneas in this reality Bruce was killed by the thief, whom Thomas later beats to death.
On the other hand, the government turned Superman on their lab rat and experiment on it in an underground facility in metropolis. Barry regains his powers and along with Batman and Cyborg rescue Superman, who would have been in a containment cell since childhood.
The role of Supergirl in The Flash
in the trailer for The Flash we can see that Kara Zor-El would assume the role of Superman in this story that takes elements from Flashpoint. The heroine is shown in prison, where she looks very weak after undergoing various experiments. Barry and Batman can also be seen rescuing Kara, who after being freed, she confronts the guards at the facility. In theory, The Flash is not an adaptation of Flashpoint, so Kara’s role in the movie could be different from Superman’s in the comic. However, the resemblance between their stories is evident.
When The Flash was announced, DC already had the Superman of Henry Cavill, but the universe of these characters went through a lot of changes. Cavill’s participation as Superman was not certain after the premiere of Joss Whedon’s Justice Leagueand when The Flash went into development, the actor would have left the DCEU. In this way, the best option they had was to replace Superman with a character that has a similar origin and that could be adapted to the story they wanted to tell.
Not many plot details for The Flash have been revealed yet, and everything we know about Supergirl’s role comes from the new trailer for the movie. Now, considering Superman’s role in Flashpoint, Supergirl will clearly be an ally of Flash and Batman, and will fight against Zod. Since Barry created a world without metahumans, Supergirl would be the only hope to defeat the villain.
