CANBERRA – A 16-year-old girl was killed by a shark when she jumped and swam to approach a group of dolphins in a river in Australia west.
State government officials and police said the girl was bitten by an unknown species of shark while outing with friends on the Swan River in the Perth suburb of North Fremantle.
Acting police superintendent for the Fremantle district Paul Robinson said the girl was pulled from the water but died of her injuries at the scene after attempts to save her life failed.
“It’s still very early days, we were told that he was with his friends in the river,” he said.

“They were playing jet ski. Maybe a school of dolphins was seen nearby and the young girl jumped to swim near the dolphins,” he said as quoted by Channel News Asia, Sunday (5/2/2023).
Describing the tragedy as a very, very traumatic incident, Robinson said the girl’s family, who are from Perth, were devastated by the news.
“Experts have stated that sharks are not uncommon in that part of the river,” he said.
The state government then warned people to be careful on the Swan River, North Fremantle and comply with any beach closures.
