RIO DE JANEIRO – The head of a giant statue Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was struck by lightning. The astonishing moment was captured by a resident, whose photo has now gone viral on social media.
A resident named Fernando Braga took a photo of the incident on Friday night, 10 February 2023.
The statue of Jesus is 100 feet high, recorded as one of the tallest statues of Jesus in the world.
The stunning scene was captured by Fernando Braga, who shared the photos on Instagram. “Divine Lightning!!! It’s Friday!!! Footage taken on February 10, 2023 at 6:55 pm (Christ) and 7:03 pm (Antenna) using a NIKON D800 with 70-200mm f/2.8E at 70mm f/8 13″ ISO 100,” wrote Braga in the post caption on Instagram.

The photos quickly went viral on social media. On Instagram, the photos garnered more than 63,000 likes. Meanwhile on Twitter, they have been viewed more than 20 million times.
In the comments section, one Instagram user wrote, “At this point Zeus or Thor. Joke apart, this is a fairly repetitive event, high point, it’s just luck someone did the photography at the right time.”
Another user commented, “Wow! Oh, wow!”
A third user commented, “Nice shot! Thanks for sharing.”
This statue of Jesus Christ who was struck by lightning in Brazil was named one of the seven wonders of the world in 2007. It is made of 700 tons of reinforced concrete.
The statue has also been struck by lightning. According to the BBC, in 2014, a lightning strike damaged the iconic statue’s thumb, after which it underwent restoration work.
