Vietnamese Police Find 2,000 Cat Carcasses, Allegedly Used for Traditional Medicine. PHOTOS/Redsvn
HANOI – Police Vietnam has found about 2,000 cat carcasses. Thousand animal carcasses the tame is suspected to be used in traditional medicine, state media said, Friday (17/2/2023).
As reported by AFP, the corpse of a cat was found in a slaughterhouse in Dong Thap province in the Mekong Delta on Thursday (16/2/2023). Thousands of cat corpses were found along with 480 live animals, according to the province’s official newspaper.

The cats are in cold storage and are believed to be destined for northern Vietnam. Some people in Vietnam believe that extracts from cat bones can help cure ailments such as asthma and osteoporosis.
It is estimated that up to one million cats fall victim to the illegal wildlife trade each year in Vietnam, according to animal welfare organization Four Paws International.
Consumption of dogs and cats is legal in this country. Many restaurants serve meat, but require a certificate to show animal origin.

The slaughterhouse in Dong Thap failed to provide documents certifying the killings and detailing traceability. So far no one has been arrested in the case.
The traditional medicine industry is a major driver of the illegal wildlife trade in Asia, and Vietnam is a center for consumption and transportation.
