Drive To Survive has been one of the central products in Formula 1’s strategy to increase the popularity of the series outside Europe, especially in the United States, where it now has an ever-growing number of fans.
But her dramatic style, some mystifications in the plots, and the way she exacerbated rivalries, has led some drivers to criticize her harshly, including Max Verstappen. After the first season, in which the producers had described his relationship with Daniel Ricciardo in a misleading way, the Dutchman did not hesitate to express his disappointment at how he had been portrayed, underlining how the same approach had also been maintained with Lando Norris .
Elements that, at first, had convinced him to give up taking part in the series for the following seasons as well, harshly criticizing his style far from reality. A problem that, according to Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1 has tried to solve in recent months by talking to both the drivers and the manufacturers, so that a convergence could be found between the two positions.
A clarifying meeting that paid off, because the two-time world champion will be part of the fifth season of Drive To Survive, which will be available on Netflix starting February 24th. The hope is that, after speaking with those involved in the creation of the series, the narrative is more adherent to reality, an element that Verstappen cited as an essential aspect for his participation.
“Well, first of all, I’ve always wanted to be a part of it (of Drive To Survive). But I’ve always said it has to be realistic. It has to be a realistic picture of who I am. my point of view. And of course I understand that, in general, when you create a show, anything, there has to be drama, it has to be exciting,” explained the Red Bull driver on the sidelines of the RB19 livery presentation at New York.
“But I’m the type who thinks it’s very important that you are represented well, and that they don’t start copying comments on different types of footage when that’s not the case. So I had to explain to them that this was my point of view. Otherwise Obviously, I didn’t want to be part of it. But yes, they understood. We’ll see, when it comes out, what they think. But of course I’m optimistic, because I know it’s very important for Formula 1 as well.”
