WASHINGTON – Hospital care facilities were fined thousands of dollars after state inspectors found hospital facilities were not treating residents with dignity and not providing appropriate care.
One hospital facility in Iowa was fined $10,000 after mistaking a woman for death.
“Sadly, the woman was found gasping in a body bag at the funeral home for more than two hours later,” said the report from the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals.
On Jan. 3, a staff member at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Specialty Care Center in Urbandale determined the 66-year-old woman was dead when she examined her and found no signs of life, according to the report.
“The woman’s mouth was open, her eyes were glued, and there were no breath sounds,” the report stated, noting that the nurse she called could not find a pulse using a stethoscope.

The hospital then summoned the woman’s family members as well as the funeral home. “The funeral home director arrived at 7:38 a.m. local time and placed him in a cloth bag and closed it,” the report said.
However, about 40 minutes later, at 8:26 a.m., when funeral home workers unzipped the body bag, they found the woman’s chest moving as she gasped for air.
The cemetery calls 911 as well as a treatment center. When emergency services personnel arrived on the scene, they took his pulse and noted he had no eye movement or verbal, vocal, or motor response.
