MANHATTAN – Billionaire United States (US) Thomas Lee, who is considered a pioneer of private equity investment, died by suicide in his office in Manhattan.
According to police, the 78-year-old billionaire killed himself by gunshot on Thursday local time.
Lee was found dead in his Fifth Avenue office in Manhattan, the headquarters of his investment firm, on Thursday morning around 11:10 a.m. local time when police responded to a 911 emergency call.
Quoting a report from the New York Post, Saturday (25/2/2023), Lee died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.

He was found lying on the bathroom floor in his office by a female assistant. The assistant went looking for him as he had not heard from him since morning.
Later, first responders found Lee lying on his side with a gunshot wound to the head.
According to a Fox News report, family friend Thomas Lee and his spokesman, Michael Sitrick, confirmed the billionaire’s death in a statement.
“The family is deeply saddened by Tom’s death. While the world knows him as one of the pioneers in the private equity business and a successful entrepreneur, we know him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, sibling, friend, and philanthropist who always put the needs of others above their own needs,” the statement read.
Thomas Lee is the Founder and Chairman of Lee Equity, which he founded in 2006 and previously served as Chairman and CEO of Thomas H. Lee Partners, which he founded in 1974.
