FC Union Berlin is coming to Amsterdam as number 2 of the German football league for the first duel with Ajax in the intermediate round of the Europa League. The team of trainer Urs Fischer won after a 2-1 deficit at RB Leipzig and continues to follow leader Bayern Munich by 1 point.
Bayern already won 3-0 against VfL Bochum on Saturday. Union Berlin, with defender Danilho Doekhi and striker Sheraldo Becker in the starting line-up, fell behind in Leipzig halfway through the first half through a goal from Benjamin Henrichs.
Union Berlin equalized after an hour of play through Janik Haberer. Robin Knoche gave the team from Berlin the win from a penalty kick. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen’s 2-2 was rejected due to offside. Leipzig remained on 36 points and has now fallen outside the top 4. Union Berlin has 6 points more.
The first duel with Ajax starts on Thursday at 6.45 pm. The return is a week later in Berlin.
