Many Turkish football clubs have expressed their condolences on social media for the hundreds of victims of the earthquake that took place in the night from Sunday to Monday. Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Besiktas, among others, have posted a message on Twitter. The Turkish Football Federation and the country’s Olympic committee have also made themselves heard.
“Our pain is great,” the football association wrote on the website. “We offer our condolences to the families of the victims and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
The epicenter of the quake, which had a magnitude of 7.8, was near the city of Gaziantep in southeastern Turkey. There have been dozens of aftershocks. The death toll in Turkey is rising rapidly and several hundred victims have also fallen across the border in Syria.
Gaziantep FK plays football at the highest level in Turkey. No Dutch players play at that club. Three games are scheduled in the Turkish league on Monday. For now, they will continue. For example, Fenerbahçe, the club of Ferdi Kadioglu and newcomer Jayden Oosterwolde, among others, plays against Konyaspor.
