In Italy more than one out of four oncology surgery still takes place in structures that do not reach the so-called ‘threshold volumes’, i.e. in clinics where the scalpel is used too few times. The new map ‘Where do I treat myself?’, presented today in Rome at the Ministry of Health by Ropi, the Italian oncology patient network, helps patients and their loved ones to find their way around the healthcare facilities that carry out oncological surgery. A compass to consciously choose the centers that in the regions carry out more operations for a specific tumour.
The map analyzes 17 different types of cancer. For example, the 15 best centers that have high volumes of breast cancer operations are in the Centre-North.
