Track cyclist Harrie Lavreysen took the gold on the keirin in the first races for this year’s Nations Cup. The reigning world champion was the fastest in the sprint on the Jakarta cycling track, ahead of the Malaysian Mohd Azizulhasni Awang and the Israeli Mikhail Yakovlev.
Jeffrey Hoogland was eliminated in the semi-finals and could not distinguish himself in the battle for places 7 to 12: he finished eleventh. Lavreysen was still beaten by Yakovlev in the semifinals. At keirin, six riders ride on the track behind a moped. As soon as it is out of the track, there is a sprint over three laps for the win.
In the women’s sprint tournament, Hetty van de Wouw reached the quarter-finals, in which Britain’s Emma Finucane was too strong in two heats. Steffie van der Peet had lost a round earlier to the French Mathilde Gros. He also won the final later in the day, in which the German Lea Sophie Friedrich was the opponent.
After Jakarta, competitions for the Nations Cup will follow in Cairo and Milton in Canada, where points can also be earned for the Olympic qualification.
